Foster\, co-chair of Benzodiazepine Action Work Group\, Benzo Free Podcast\, Easing Anxiety\nModerator: Jamie Feld\, MPH \nThere is a growing crisis of patient harm from prescribed benzodiazepines\, a class of medications traditionally prescribed for anxiety\, sleep and anesthesia. While benzodiazepines have some limited indications\, they are often prescribed in the absence of adequate research and for far longer than the recommended time limitation of 2-4 weeks. In September 2020\, the FDA added a boxed warning to prescription benzodiazepines. This warning states that “Physical dependence can occur when benzodiazepines are taken steadily for several days to weeks\, even as prescribed.” And that “Stopping them abruptly or reducing the dosage too quickly can result in withdrawal reactions\, including seizures\, which can be life-threatening.” Unfortunately\, much of the public and many healthcare providers are unaware of this warning. Studies report 10-44% of chronic benzodiazepine users experience moderate to severe protracted withdrawal symptoms upon cessation lasting months to years; some have suggested calling this phenomena “Benzodiazepine Induced Brain Injury” or “Benzodiazepine Injury Syndrome”.  This session looks at the benzodiazepine crisis from the perspectives of medical professionals\, affected patients\, and community organizers. The goal of this session to increase knowledge about safer prescribing and deprescribing of benzodiazepines.

DESCRIPTION:Mad in America\, the Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry\, International Institute for Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal and A Disorder 4 Everyone present a series of live\, online town hall discussions focussing on issues related to psychiatric drug withdrawal. \nFor the third discussion\, they examin protracted problems that can arise after psychiatric drug withdrawal. Sometimes referred to as post-acute or post-withdrawal syndromes\, these experiences can include chronic health problems and sexual dysfunction. What do we know and not know about responding to long- term health problems after coming off psychiatric drugs? \nPanelists \nAdele Framer \nAdele resides in San Francisco\, USA. A survivor of 11 years of antidepressant withdrawal syndrome\, in 2011\, under the pseudonym Altostrata\, she founded the peer support site SurvivingAntidepressants.org\, currently containing more than 6\,000 longitudinal case histories from its 14\,000 members. A widely recognized patient advocate\, she is a lay expert in psychiatric drug tapering and withdrawal syndromes. \nWill Hall \nWill is a schizophrenia diagnosis survivor and longtime organizer with the psychiatric survivor movement. He is a PhD candidate at Maastricht University and lead researcher on the Maastricht World Survey on Antipsychotic Drug Withdrawal\, and author of the Harm Reduction Guide to Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs\, as well as host of Madness Radio and a co-founder of the Hearing Voices Network USA. \nDavid Healy\nDavid is a Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton Canada. He has been raising concerns about withdrawal from antidepressants since the mid-1990s and was an expert witness in a successful legal case about withdrawal and dependence in 2004. He figures we have made little or no progress sorting the issues out and now have a major public health crisis on our hands. \nNicole Lamberson\nNicole is a physician assistant as well as a patient suffering protracted harm following a rapid medical “detox” from prescribed benzodiazepines/Z-drugs & other psychotropic polypharmacy. She co- founded The Withdrawal Project\, serves on the Medical Board of Benzodiazepine Information Coalition\, & does outreach for Medicating Normal-The Film.

SUMMARY:On Being Both A Patient Harmed By Prescribed Psychiatric Medication & A Medical Provider
DESCRIPTION:This panel is focused on the experiences of four medical providers who were also patients and were harmed by prescribed psychiatric medication. \nPanelists: \nChristy Huff\, MD\, is a cardiologist residing in the U.S. and director of Benzodiazepine Information Coalition\, a nonprofit that educates about the adverse effects of prescribed benzodiazepines. Dr. Huff experienced benzodiazepine adverse effects and injury firsthand after three weeks of prescribed Xanax use for insomnia in 2015. Over a three-year period\, she slowly tapered off benzodiazepines utilizing Valium and suffered disabling withdrawal symptoms for the entirety of her taper. Her personal experience led her to realize the serious risks of these drugs and the severity of the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome\, neither of which were emphasized during her medical training. Dr. Huff specifically advocates for better education of physicians regarding the adverse effects of benzodiazepines and how to safely taper patients off these drugs. \nDr Mark Horowitz is a training psychiatrist and researcher\, who has a PhD from King’s College London on the neurobiology of depression and the action of antidepressants. He also\, for many years\, took the drugs he prescribed. When he tried to come off them he had a quick and sharp education into the world of withdrawal and the lack of knowledge in the medical field about this topic. Since then he has tried to bring more awareness to the topic of safe de-prescribing of psychotropic drugs through his academic work\, including articles published on how to safely taper antidepressants and antipsychotics\, and work with the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK on developing their guidance for patients stopping antidepressants. He is currently the clinical research fellow on the RADAR trial in London\, looking at the effect of gradually tapering people with schizophrenia off their antipsychotics. \nDr Peter Gordon is Scottish and lives near Stirling. He retired from medicine in 2020 at the age of 51 years. He felt that he could no longer work as a Consultant psychiatrist given his concerns in relation to the consequences of over-medicalisation including prescribed harm. To help anxiety he was started on an SSRI antidepressant in the 1990s following the UK’s ‘Defeat Depression Campaign’. He has not been able to successfully withdraw from this prescribed medication and the harmful consequences of this drug have had a huge impact on his life. As an NHS doctor\, Peter advocated for professional values and the importance of transparency. In addition to his medical degrees\, Peter has a Masters degree in the Arts. Peter is married and his wife is a General Practitioner. Together they have two grown-up children. \nNicole Lamberson\, PA is a physician assistant residing in the U.S. and a member of the outreach team for Medicating Normal-The Film. Nicole also serves on the Medical Advisory Board of Benzodiazepine Information Coalition and she co-founded The Withdrawal Project\, a grassroots community effort of Inner Compass Initiative. She has also volunteered annually on World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day since its inception. She is also a member of the prescribed harm community\, having been a patient herself after being prescribed Xanax in 2005 for “work stress.” Misdiagnosed benzodiazepine tolerance withdrawal and adverse effects subsequently led to prescribed polypharmacy—including two benzodiazepines prescribed simultaneously\, a Z-drug\, an antidepressant\, a stimulant\, and an antipsychotic. A medically-recommended rapid “detox” in 2010 ultimately resulted in a severe and protracted withdrawal syndrome (neurotoxicity) that persists to date.
