Benzodiazepine Information Coalition

Benzodiazepine Cooperative Providers

We are pleased to offer this list of medical professionals, connecting those wishing to taper with providers who may assist. We also provide options for paid support, taper coaching services, and complementary services for benzodiazepine harm.

While some providers on our list are highly skilled in cessation methods, others may be willing to provide prescriptions, but their tapering advice may be over-rapid and require further discussion. The providers referred to on this site are provided for informational purposes only. Benzodiazepine Information Coalition is not affiliated with, nor does it sponsor, these providers and, therefore, cannot verify their accuracy or legitimacy.

Providers are included on this list either by their own request or through patient recommendations. We conduct a basic vetting process consisting of a few essential questions, which may involve asking the patient rather than the provider. While we occasionally remove providers based on feedback, we carefully weigh this against the risk of another patient being unable to access a benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepine Information Coalition has no control over the pricing or policies of these providers. For any inquiries regarding the content of these listings, please contact the providers directly.

Media and Government Officials

If you are a journalist, reporter, or government official seeking an expert on benzodiazepines, we kindly request that you refrain from contacting individuals on the provided list. Instead, please reach out to us directly at bic@benzoinfo.com, and we will be glad to assist you in connecting with an appropriate expert.

How to Join Our List

If you are a medical provider who is open to slow, patient-guided tapers, we encourage you to fill out our Benzodiazepine Tapering Cooperative Providers Application. Patients who wish to recommend their provider can complete the Patient Recommendation form. For non-medical supporters such as coaches or therapists, and those offering complementary services, please visit our Sponsorship Information page to learn more about applying to join this list.

How to Report a Problem

We greatly value feedback from patients in order to maintain an up-to-date list. If you have encountered any issues with a provider listed on our website or if an office has permanently closed, we encourage you to inform us. Please feel free to reach out to us via email at bic@benzoinfo.com to share your feedback. Your input is essential in helping us ensure the accuracy and relevance of our listings.

Important Information

Purpose of this List

The inclusion of a provider on this list does not imply expertise in benzodiazepine cessation. This list primarily aims to address prescription access concerns rather than provide benzodiazepine cessation experts or protracted withdrawal assistance. If you have a prescriber who may lack extensive knowledge but is willing to support your slow tapering protocol, it may be advisable to continue working with them. This list is particularly beneficial for patients whose prescribers are forcing a rapid and unsafe taper or have abruptly discontinued their access to a prescription.

Detox Facilities

We do not endorse abrupt cessation for the majority of patients, including abrupt cessation carried out in detox or rehab facilities. To understand the reasons behind this stance, we encourage you to read our resource Detox, Cold Turkey, Abrupt Cessation.

In rare cases, a rapid withdrawal may be considered as a lesser evil, such as when the medication elicits a paradoxical response, although this occurrence is very infrequent. While we acknowledge that many patients who wish to discontinue benzodiazepines want to withdraw from the medication as quickly as possible, rapid withdrawal often poses the highest risks and dangers once physical dependence has developed.

Medications and Supplements for Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

More about medications and supplements can be found on our Medications And Supplements Of Concern On Benzodiazepines, During Cessation And After Withdrawal page. There are currently no FDA-approved medications, treatments, or supplements specifically designed for addressing benzodiazepine withdrawal and harm. Prescriptions for unproven medications, treatment, or offers of other therapies (supplements, etc.) can be politely declined at your discretion.

A Note About Protracted Withdrawal Help

There is very little information and support available for understanding, identifying, researching, and managing symptoms that occur after stopping benzodiazepines. Additionally, there is a lack of established treatments supported by solid evidence for protracted withdrawal symptoms. The choices patients have for treatment are mostly experimental. We do not have a list of providers who offer such services, unless noted in their listing, as we are unsure about their safety and how well they work. Support Services, listed for each state, are suitable for individuals experiencing long-lasting complications

Slow Tapering Resources

Most patients cannot find a doctor with appropriate training as medical education does not sufficiently address benzodiazepine safety, so benzodiazepine-aware prescribers are extremely rare. Because of this gap in medical training, to prevent long-term damage, we recommend that all patients learn about safer cessation on their own so they can ensure any medical advice received is sound.

To learn how to join or recommend a provider, visit How to Join Our List. Maintaining this list requires a significant amount of time and effort. If you have benefitted from this list, we would greatly appreciate your support.

This list welcomes providers who are willing to help patients slowly taper their benzodiazepines, even if they aren’t experts. They may suggest tapering too quickly, or adding unproven medications, and other treatments, so it’s important to understand what a safe taper involves and be ready to discuss it with them. To learn more about slow tapering, visit our Slow Tapering Resources section, purchase The Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines, or consult with a Taper Coach.

There are no FDA-approved medications or other established treatments for benzodiazepine withdrawal. Some unproven treatments, such as prescriptions, therapies, and supplements are associated with setbacks. Learn more here.

The medical providers on this list typically cannot help those with protracted problems beyond reinstatement. They likely cannot assist those who want to keep taking benzodiazepines or Z-drugs indefinitely. Those off benzodiazepines not wishing to reinstate and experiencing protracted complications may want to consider other support options. Check out our important information at the start of this page. Verify in advance that the listed provider can provide the desired help.

Patients are encouraged to develop supportive self-care practices as part of this process, including regular exercise, healthy eating, individual counseling or therapy, and some form of meditative practice. A high degree of self-motivation and communal support is essential in this process. The support of each patient’s personal healthcare provider is also encouraged. Please note that only self-pay is accepted, and healthcare insurance plans are not accommodated.

Complimentary and Alternative Services

Studies are very limited with regard to how complementary and/or alternative services/ medical care may affect benzodiazepine injury/withdrawal syndromes. There are no FDA-approved complementary or alternative medications, supplements, therapies and/or modalities to aid with benzodiazepine injury/withdrawal specifically. However, some benzo-affected individuals wish to try and/or anecdotally report a benefit from some of these treatments/modalities. The individuals/practitioners listed below are benzo-aware and working in a complementary/alternative space. Before trying any medication, supplement and/or therapy, BIC recommends you research its safety and/or effectiveness.

I am an internal medicine and addiction medicine specialist. I am not a psychiatrist. I generally use motivational interviewing as a guiding principle and will work with any patients with a goal of coming off of their benzodiazepine. I do not believe that long-term benzodiazepine use is an effective treatment for anxiety or insomnia due to the development of tolerance. I do believe that coming off of benzodiazepines is best accomplished slowly via teamwork between the patient and the prescriber.

We have full scale addiction treatment available if it proves to be necessary including medical withdrawal management (“detox”) and inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment. I predict that most users of the benzoinfo.com website will not require these services however.

However, some benzo-affected individuals wish to try and/or anecdotally report a benefit from some of these treatments/modalities.

Is something on our list outdated? Do you have feedback on a provider? Let us know at bic@benzoinfo.com!
We won’t share any part of your message with a provider without your express permission.
